==Ealy life and education==
Valdur Ohakas was born in [[Tallinn]], [[Estonia]], the son of Johannes Ohakas (1900–1979) and Agathe Elise Ohakas (née Kirnmann, 1903–1997). He attended [[Tallinn School No. 21|Tallinn Primary School No. 21]], Tallinn Middle School No. 2, Tallinn Trade School, and Tallinn Evening Technical School.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Toom |first1=Maire |title=Valdur Ohaka teoste näitus: kataloog |date=1977 |publisher=Eesti NSV Riiklik Kunstimuuseum |location=Tallinn}}</ref> From 1942 to 1943, he studied at the [[Estonian Academy of Art|Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts]] under [[Eerik Haamer]] and [[Johannes Greenberg]].<ref name="EE">{{cite encyclopedia |title=Valdur Ohakas |encyclopedia=Eesti entsüklopeedia |date=2000 |publisher=Eesti Entsüklopeediakirjastus |volume=14: Eesti elulood|location=Tallinn |page=335}}</ref> From 1943 to 1944, he was mobilized into the German army.<ref name="EE"/> From 1944 to 1948, he studied at the [[Pallas Art School (1919–1940)|Tartu State Art Institute]] under [[Johannes Võerahansu]] and [[Elmar Kits]], but he did not graduate from the school because in 1949 he was arrested with a group of art students and sent to the [[Vorkutlag|Vorkuta Gulag]] in the [[Karaganda Region]] of the [[Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic|Kazakh SSR]].<ref name="EE"/> He was released in 1956.<ref name="EE"/>
