''Swainsona pedunculata'' is a annual herb up to {{cvt|20|cm}} high with strongly ribbed and hairy stems. Its leaves are imparipinnate, less than {{cvt|50|mm}} long on a long [[Petiole (botany)|petiole]], with 3 to 7, usually 5 narrowly elliptic or lance-shaped leaflets, the lower leaflets {{cvt|10–20|mm}} long and {{cvt|1–2|mm}} wide. There is a tapering linear [[stipule]] often {{cvt|5|mm}} long at the base of the petiole. The flowers are arranged in racemes with 2 to 3 flowers on a [[Peduncle (botany)|peduncle]] about {{cvt|0.5|mm}} long, each flower {{cvt|10–15|mm}} long on a [[Pedicel (botany)|pedicel]] {{cvt|1–2|mm}} long. The [[sepal]]s are joined at the base, forming a tube about {{cvt|2|mm}} long, the sepal lobes about twice as long as the tube. The petals are purple, the [[Papilionaceous flower#Corolla|standard]] petal about {{cvt|15|mm}} long and wide, the [[Papilionaceous flower#Corolla|wings]] {{cvt|10–15|mm}} long, and the [[Papilionaceous flower#Corolla|keel]] about {{cvt|10|mm}} long and {{cvt|5|mm}} long and {{cvt|1.0–1.5|mm}} deep.
