In December 1917, the Guangdong Military Government led by [[Sun Yat-sen]] formed the Guangdong Army aiding Fujian, with Chen Jiongming as its commander-in-chief. Starting in April 1918, Chen Jiongming divided his forces into three routes to attack [[Fujian]].
