Biography
Born in 1594 as the eldest son of Yamazaki Iemori, the lord of Mita Castle in Settsu Province, Ieharu was born from a concubine, not the main wife Tenkyu-in. His second wife was Tomomitsu-in, the daughter of poet Kinoshita Katsutoshi. Through marriage relationships, he became related to various prominent figures, including Ikeda Nagayuki and Takeda Nobuyoshi. His sons-in-law included Yabu Tsugutaka and Takariki Masafusa. Takariki Tadafusa, like Tadafusa, Ieharu was involved in the restoration of the Shimabara Rebellion. In October 1614, Yamazaki Ieharu inherited 22,900 koku in the Wakasa Domain in Inaba Province after his father's death. During the Osaka Winter Campaign, his younger brother Hisaie was killed in battle. In 1615, he fought in the Osaka Summer Campaign under his cousin Ikeda Toshitaka and took six enemy heads. In 1617, the domain was reduced to 325,000 koku and transferred to Tottori Domain. Yamazaki Ieharu was moved to the Nariwa Domain of 35,000 koku. He defended Mihara Castle during the Fukushima Masanori incident in 1619 and helped construct stone walls for Osaka Castle in 1620. The Yamazaki clan's seal is on the stone walls of Osaka Castle, and waste stones from the construction were used for Nakanoshima. In 1634, Yamazaki Ieharu became lord of Iyo-Matsuyama Domain after Gamou Tadatomo's death. Due to these achievements, in September 1641, in Sanuki Province, which governed the western half of Sanuki, was given an additional transfer of 53,000 koku and became Marugame Domain. At the time of his arrival in the province, the temple served as his lodging, but 1642, he was granted permission to plan the construction of a new castle in the abandoned Marugame Castle. The shogunate also felt the necessity of building a castle in this strategic location in the Seto Inland Sea, so they exempted Kazuharu from the obligation of alternate attendance and granted him 300 kan of silver. While Ieharu began the construction of Marugame Castle, he also managed and developed the castle town, laying the foundation for the present-day Marugame. However, due to the elaborate design of Marugame Castle, he died on March 17, 1648 without witnessing its completion at the age of 55. The construction of Marugame Castle was later taken over by the Yamazaki clan after the departure of the Kazuharu family and was finally completed in 1660 under the supervision of Kyojima Takakazu. <ref>Nakamura, Michio (1993).
