She argued in 2017 that sea-grasses may be good for supporting sea-horses but the argument was more essential that this "fluffy" approach suggested. Sea-grasses do support sea horses but they are important resources for the fishing industry.<ref>{{Cite news |date=2017-11-17 |title=Fishing 'best argument for seagrass conservation' |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-42028699 |access-date=2024-04-28 |work=BBC News |language=en-GB}}</ref> In 2018 she was the prime author of a paper in [[Science (journal)|Science]] calling for action to protect seagrass.<ref name="science">{{Cite journal|last1=Cullen-Unsworth|first1=Leanne C.|author-link=Leanne Cullen-Unsworth|last2=Unsworth|first2=Richard|date=2018-08-03|title=A call for seagrass protection| url=https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126...24|bibcode=2018Sci...361..446C|s2cid=51908021}}</ref>

She contributed to research that found that seagrasses are important for a type of [[gleaning]] i.e. "fishing with basic gear, including bare hands, in shallow water not deeper than that one can stand".
