Rabbi Ephraim al-Naqawa (Arabic for "purity") reaches Tlemcen riding a lion, after being left in the desert because his caravan would not stop for Shabbat. At the time, Tlemcen was a capital city, whereas at present it is a city in northwest Algeria.
Some read his surname in Hebrew as "El Neqavveh", i.e., "In God we hope". This dovetails with a legend according to which, while in the Maghreb he was in a caravan that refused to stop, as per his request, for Shabbat, and he refused to travel on Shabbat. Therefore, he asked them to leave him in the desert. They had refused because of dangerous animals found in the wilderness. While he was saying the prayer service for the evening of Shabbat, he saw a lion approach and sit calmly. The rabbi nevertheless went to sleep, trusting the no harm would come to him. At the end of Shabbat, at nightfall, the lion approached and crouched down, so that the rabbi would mount. He did so, and a snake approached, and the rabbi used it as a halter. Thus, dangerous animals had been eager to serve him. The lion ran during the night and on Sunday, and reached the marketplace of Tlemcen, where the caravan had arrived. At his sight, everybody understood that this was a saintly man, for whom a miracle had been performed.
