Samson, a driver's assistant, and Salubi, a teenage driver without a license, are talking about the benefits of their employment inside the store. While Salubi works for himself and only accepts lone passengers, Samson is employed by Kotonu, who operates an unofficial bus that was modified from a truck. To see a collision scene, he departs with Kotonu.<ref>{{Cite web |title=The Road Summary - eNotes.com |url=https://www.enotes.com/topics/road-wole-soyinka |access-date=2024-05-09 |website=eNotes |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last=Gibbs |first=James |date=1995 |title=The Writer and the Road: Wole Soyinka and Those Who Cause Death by Dangerous Driving |url=https://www.africabib.org/rec.php?RID=146395425 |journal=Journal of Modern African Studies |language=en |volume=33 |issue=3 |pages=469–498}}</ref>
