The Algerian government has taken several measures to protect this endangered animal, such as placing signs in places where they are commonly found to prohibit people from feeding it as some of the foods that people give to the monkeys sometimes lead to their death. Also, prohibit owning them for breeding.

The Algerian government has also initiated the creation of several nature reserves where large numbers of the species are found, such as the Taza National Park and the Gouraya National Park overlooking the Béjaïa Bay, as well as the Djurdjura National Park.
