This district is a consolidation of four existing school districts. The residents of the area approved establishing this district in an election held on October 13, 1998. Rivendell Supervisory Union began administrative oversight of those four districts effective July 1, 1999, and the district itself began operations on the same calendar date in 2000.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://nhrivendellisd.schoolinsites.com/about|title=About Rivendell|publisher=Rivendell Interstate School District|access-date=2024-04-28}}</ref> It was the first school district in the United States to officially include territory in multiple states.
