==Premise====Plot==
In 1996, withdrawn 7th-grader Owen strikes a friendship with troubled 9th-grader Maddy, who he notices reading an episode guide of the young-adult television series ''The Pink Opaque,'' which features a group of teenage girls fighting monsters in a supernatural realm trying to do them harm. Faking being invited to another's kid's house for a sleepover, he sneaks over to Maddie's house to watch the upcoming episode alongside her friend Amanda. Though daunted by the series' dense mythology, Owen falls in love with the series.
Two teenagers bond over their love of a television series. After it is mysteriously canceled, their reality begins to blur.<ref name="press"/>
Two years later, Owen's mother Brenda is stricken with a terminal illness, forcing him to contend with having to live alone with his cruel and judgmental stepfather Frank. As well, Maddy has become ostracized by her peers after a rumor of her touching Amanda's breast circulated the previous year and Amanda has since went on to become part of the cheer squad, exacerbating the bullying. Maddy continues watching ''The Pink Opaque'' to cope with her both her miserable social life and physically abusive father, but Owen is unable to watch with her due to his parents' strict curfew. Maddy begins taping the episodes for Owen to watch later and provides him notes explaining the lore of the series until he is all caught up.
Owen visits Maddy once again to watch the newest episode. The following morning, Maddy resolves to run away from home, convinced she will die there somehow if she stays in her town for much longer. She invites Owen to accompany her, but he appears conflicted. Over the course of the next year, Brenda dies of her disease, and within the same month of each other, Maddy disappears without a trace, and ''The Pink Opaque'' is canceled after five seasons.
In 2007, Owen continues to live with and help support Frank, working at a local movie theater for income. One night, Mandy appears to him alive and seemingly well, asking to speak with him in private. At a bar on the outskirts of town, Maddy alludes to Owen that the world of ''The Pink Opaque'' is actually real and that she and Owen can live there. Later, inside an inflatable constellation dome, Maddy explains that when she left town, everywhere she tried to live gave her the same feelings of stagnancy and isolation that she felt at home. One day, she convinced and paid a stranger to bury her alive, her prolonged entrapment causing her to appear in ''The Pink Opaque,'' picking up where the series left off in its cliffhanger season five finale. She tries to convince Owen to have himself buried alive and join her in ''The Pink Opaque,'' but he cannot believe her and he runs back home, where he finds Frank suffered a debilitating stroke.
By 2010, Owen never sees Maddy again, and he and his manager get jobs at the local Fun Center after the movie theater closes down. Frank dies after suffering a debilitating stroke, and Owen decides to continue living there and assume more responsibilities for himself. After rediscovering ''The Pink Opaque'' on streaming, Owen revisits it, only to find that the show was cheesier, cheaper, and more poorly written than he remembered, deeply depressing him.
In 2030, Owen is now in his upper-40's and is still working the same menial position at the Fun Center. His physical health, namely his asthma, has greatly worsened as he is unable to afford medicine for his inhaler. During a family birthday party, Owen suffers a mental breakdown, retreating and locking himself in the bathroom. He experiences a vision in which he cuts his chest open with a boxcutter and pulls it open, revealing a TV screen playing distorted and staticky footage of ''The Pink Opaque.'' He eventually returns, embarrassedly apologizing to the other guests for his outburst.
