The title of Count of Vergado was established in 1421 when the island was under control of the Republic of Venice. The first holder was a Venetian nobleman named Zloradis who obtained a lease over Vrgada on October 18, 1421.

In 1453, ownership transferred to Conte Farina, who had been granted the island by Venice in recognition of his services. The Dukes of Klokocica bought Vrgada in 1652 and ruled over it until 1681 when the Damiani family acquired the island.

The island of Vrgada has a long history predating the Venetian nobles. In the late 14th century, monks of the Paulist order left the monastery on the mainland at Vrana and established a monastery of St. George on Vrgada, remaining for about 20 years until relocating again around 1410.

One of the island's oldest structures is the Church of St. Andrew, built along the lines of ancient pre-Romanesque Croatian churches in the 9th century. According to legend, a wooden statue of the Byzantine St. Andrew washed ashore, leading locals to build the church to enshrine it. St. Andrew remains the patron saint of fishermen on Vrgada.

Traces of the island's former salt pans can still be seen in the Przina bay area. Under Venetian rule, Vrgada was obligated to provide salt annually to the authorities in Zadar.
