Born in Warkworth,<ref>{{NeilBrownPlayers|player6/bobappleby}}</ref> Appleby moved from Amble Welfare to [[Middlesbrough F.C.|Middlesbrough]] aged 17, initially playing with their Reserves before making his first-team debut in April 1960.<ref name="auto">{{Cite web|url=https://mfc.co.uk//news/2024/april/25/rest-in-peace--bob-appleby/|title=Rest In Peace, Bob Appleby|first=Middlesborough|last=FC|date=25 April 2024|website=Middlesborough FC}}</ref> He was a first-team regular for two seasons, and made nearly 100 appearances before moving to [[Hereford United F.C.|Hereford United]] in 1967.<ref name="auto"/> He also played for [[Carlisle United F.C.|Carlisle United]].<ref>{{ENFA}}</ref>
