Mayes attended the [[University of Wales Institute, Cardiff]], now known as [[Cardiff Metropolitan University]]. In 2002 she graduated with a [[Bachelor of Science]] in Sport and Exercise Science, in 2004 she completed a [[Master of Science|masters]] in Sports Psychology and in 2009 she gained a [[Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education]]. Between 2008 and 2011, Mayes served as an assistant coach with [[England national netball team|England]].
