On election day, 2 October 1844, [[Whig Party (United States)|Whig]] nominee [[Thomas Pratt (Maryland politician)|Thomas Pratt]] won the election by a margin of 548 votes against his opponent [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democratic]] nominee [[James Carroll (Maryland politician)|James Carroll]], thereby gaining Whig control over the office of governor.
