Antoni Pietkiewicz was born on 24 December 1948 in [[Kalish]], [[Polish People's Republic|Poland]]. His parents were Feliks and Janina Pietkiewicz, and has younger brother Jerzy. In 1978 he had granted from the Faculty of the Power Engineering of the [[Łódź University of Technology]], and had done postgraduate studies at the [[Warsaw University of Technology]] and the [[SGH Warsaw School of Economics]].<ref name=es>{{cite web|url=https://encysol.pl/es/encyklopedia/biogramy/18123,Pietkiewicz-Antoni.html|title=Encyklopedia Solidarności. In the 1970s he was an activist in the [[Movement for Defence of Human and Civic Rights]] and the [[Workers' Defence Committee]]. From 1979 to 1980 he co-published newsletter ''Wolne Słowo'' (''The Free Word'', and in 1980 he became a member of the [[Solidarity (Polish trade union)|Solidarity]] trade union. He led in the creation of its divisiin in Kalish, and was a board member of its South Greater Poland Region.
