== Impact ==
An earthquake swarm caused collapsed houses and landslides on Nii-jima, Kōzu-shima, [[Shikine-jima]], and Miyake-jima. An earthquake with a maximum JMA seismic intensity of ''Shindo 6-'' on 1 July, killed one person in a landslide in Kozushima Village. It also caused a total of 15 injured people, 15 completely destroyed houses, 20 partially destroyed houses, and 174 partially damaged houses.<ref>{{Cite web |title=日本付近で発生した主な被害地震(平成8年以降) |url=https://www.data.jma.go.jp/svd/eqev/data/higai/higai1996-new.html#higai1996 |access-date=2 May 2024 |website=[[Japan Meteorological Agency]]}}</ref>
